A practical checklist for safer movement around the home
Use this checklist to identify potential fall risks, mobility challenges and everyday obstacles around your home. Work through each section and tick the items that are already addressed.

1. Walking Areas & Trip Hazards
- ☐ Walking areas are clear of clutter and unnecessary obstacles.
- ☐ Rugs and mats are secure and do not create a slipping or tripping hazard.
- ☐ Electrical cords are positioned safely and do not cross walking paths.
- ☐ Floors are reasonably even and free from damaged or loose coverings.
- ☐ Changes in floor levels are easy to see and navigate.
- ☐ Frequently used pathways are wide enough to move through safely.
2. Stairs & Steps
- ☐ Stairs and steps are kept clear of objects and clutter.
- ☐ Handrails are available where needed and are secure.
- ☐ Steps have adequate lighting.
- ☐ Step edges are easy to see.
- ☐ Stair and step surfaces provide suitable grip.
- ☐ Items are not regularly carried up or down stairs in a way that obstructs visibility.
3. Sitting, Standing & Transfers
- ☐ Chairs and seating are stable and do not move unexpectedly when used.
- ☐ Frequently used chairs are at a suitable height for the person using them.
- ☐ There is enough clear space around seating areas to sit down and stand up safely.
- ☐ Getting in and out of bed can be done without unnecessary obstacles.
- ☐ Suitable support is available if standing, sitting or transferring is difficult.
- ☐ Furniture is not being used as an unsuitable substitute for dedicated support equipment.
4. Mobility Aids & Support Equipment
- ☐ Mobility aids are readily accessible when needed.
- ☐ There is enough space to use mobility aids safely.
- ☐ Mobility aids are positioned where they can be reached without unnecessary stretching or bending.
- ☐ Walking aids and other support equipment are stable and in suitable condition.
- ☐ Equipment is used according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- ☐ Damaged, loose or unstable equipment has been removed from use.
5. Lighting & Visibility
- ☐ Main walking areas have adequate lighting.
- ☐ Light switches are easy to locate and operate.
- ☐ Stairs, steps and changes in floor level are adequately illuminated.
- ☐ A clear and adequately lit pathway is available between frequently used rooms.
- ☐ Suitable night lighting is available where needed.
- ☐ Excessive glare and dark areas are minimised where possible.
6. Footwear & Everyday Movement
- ☐ Frequently worn footwear fits securely and is comfortable to walk in.
- ☐ Footwear provides suitable grip for the surfaces where it is normally used.
- ☐ Loose or poorly fitting footwear is avoided when moving around the home.
- ☐ Frequently used items are stored within comfortable reach.
- ☐ Heavy or awkward items are not routinely carried in a way that obstructs vision or balance.
- ☐ Everyday tasks can be completed without unnecessary rushing, reaching or climbing.
