Bathroom Safety Checklist

A practical checklist for a safer, more accessible bathroom

Use this checklist to identify potential safety, accessibility and everyday-use improvements in your bathroom. Work through each section and tick the items that are already addressed.

1. Floors & Walking Areas

• ☐ Bathroom floors are kept dry and reasonably free from water.
• ☐ Mats and rugs are secure and do not create a slipping or tripping hazard.
• ☐ Walking areas are clear of baskets, bins, cords and other obstacles.
• ☐ There are no loose or damaged floor coverings.
• ☐ Changes in floor levels are easy to see and navigate.

2. Shower & Bath Safety

• ☐ The shower or bath has a suitable slip-resistant surface.
• ☐ Suitable support is available when entering or leaving the shower or bath.
• ☐ Grab rails or other support equipment are positioned where needed.
• ☐ A shower chair or seat is available if standing for extended periods is difficult.
• ☐ Shower controls can be reached without excessive stretching or bending.
• ☐ Shampoo, soap and other frequently used items are within comfortable reach.
• ☐ Water drains effectively and does not leave unnecessary standing water.

3. Toilet Safety

• ☐ There is sufficient clear space around the toilet.
• ☐ The toilet can be approached and used without unnecessary obstacles.
• ☐ Additional support is available if getting on or off the toilet is difficult.
• ☐ The toilet height is suitable for the person using it.
• ☐ Toilet paper and frequently used items are within easy reach.
• ☐ The pathway between the bedroom and bathroom is clear, particularly at night.

4. Lighting & Visibility

• ☐ The bathroom has adequate general lighting.
• ☐ Light switches are easy to locate and operate.
• ☐ The shower, bath and toilet areas are sufficiently illuminated.
• ☐ Dark areas and excessive shadows are minimised.
• ☐ Suitable night lighting is available if the bathroom is used overnight.

5. Everyday Convenience

• ☐ Frequently used toiletries are stored within comfortable reach.
• ☐ Heavy or awkward items are not stored where they need to be lifted overhead.
• ☐ Soap, shampoo and other products can be accessed without unsafe bending or stretching.
• ☐ Bathroom surfaces are reasonably uncluttered.
• ☐ Items used regularly can be operated without excessive force or dexterity.

6. Support & Accessibility

• ☐ Bathroom doors can be opened and closed without creating an obstruction.
• ☐ There is enough room to move safely around the bathroom.
• ☐ Support equipment is stable and correctly positioned.
• ☐ Mobility aids can be used safely within the available space.
• ☐ Damaged, loose or unstable equipment has been removed from use.
• ☐ Any new support equipment is installed and used according to the manufacturer's instructions.
