A practical checklist for a safer, more accessible bedroom

Use this checklist to identify potential safety, accessibility and everyday-use improvements in your bedroom. Work through each section and tick the items that are already addressed.

1. Bed & Getting In and Out
- ☐ The bed is positioned so there is a clear and safe path around it.
- ☐ Getting into and out of bed can be done without unnecessary obstacles.
- ☐ The bed height is suitable for the person using it.
- ☐ Suitable support is available if getting in or out of bed is difficult.
- ☐ Bed rails, handles or other support equipment are stable and used according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- ☐ Bedding does not create a tripping or entanglement hazard.
2. Floors & Walking Areas
- ☐ Walking areas around the bed are clear of clutter.
- ☐ Rugs and mats are secure and do not create a slipping or tripping hazard.
- ☐ There are no loose floor coverings, cords or other obstacles across walking paths.
- ☐ Shoes, clothing and other items are stored away from walking areas.
- ☐ Mobility aids can be positioned and used safely within the available space.
3. Lighting & Night-Time Visibility
- ☐ The bedroom has adequate general lighting.
- ☐ Light switches are easy to locate and operate.
- ☐ A bedside light or other convenient light source is available.
- ☐ A clear and adequately lit pathway is available between the bed and the bedroom door.
- ☐ The pathway to the bathroom is clear, particularly if the bathroom is used during the night.
- ☐ Suitable night lighting is available where needed.
4. Furniture & Trip Hazards
- ☐ Furniture is stable and does not move unexpectedly when used for support.
- ☐ Drawers and cupboard doors can be opened without obstructing walking areas.
- ☐ Furniture corners and edges do not create an unnecessary hazard.
- ☐ Electrical cords are positioned safely and do not cross walking paths.
- ☐ Frequently used furniture and items are positioned within comfortable reach.
5. Clothing & Storage
- ☐ Frequently worn clothing is stored where it can be reached comfortably.
- ☐ Heavy items are not stored where they need to be lifted overhead.
- ☐ Items that require frequent bending or stretching are stored at a suitable height.
- ☐ Wardrobes, drawers and storage areas can be accessed without creating a trip hazard.
- ☐ Clothing and personal items are not left on the floor.
6. Support & Accessibility
- ☐ There is enough space to move safely around the bedroom.
- ☐ Mobility aids can be accessed easily when needed.
- ☐ Frequently used switches, controls and personal items are within comfortable reach.
- ☐ Emergency access to the bedroom is not obstructed.
- ☐ Support equipment is stable, correctly positioned and used according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- ☐ Damaged, loose or unstable equipment has been removed from use.
